About the winery and the wine

The Earth’s mantle thrusts up above the gentle town of Franschhoek, a wild slice of untamed mountain on which sits a farm named Wildeberg. This is where Wild House shiraz is made. An established wine region for some 350 years, sensible generations never thought to plant a vine here until a happy band of idealists recently craned their necks up at this hillside and, dizzy with hope, decided to give it a go.

Franschhoek is on the very edge of the south-eastern corner of the Cape’s venerable Coastal Region, indeed Wildeberg’s property border runs over the top of the mountain where the Coastal Region gives way to the baboon-strewn road to Grabouw and the wider Western Cape.

Tasting notes

A color of deep garnet ruby of freshly squeezed Coastal Shiraz. It has a nose of really good summer pudding, ripe black cherry, vanilla and even a touch of raspberry. On the palate more rich black fruits, a blob of proper creme fraiche with a suggestion of dark chocolate and star anise. Youthful acidity and ripe balanced tannins give a fresh finish with depth and complexity.

What to pair with Wild House shiraz?

This wine matches very well with bobotie (traditional South African dish), game and curries, spare ribs and pepper steak. It will also complement very well bloomy rind cheeses such as camembert.
